The glacier was part of a Aneto the headwaters of the great glacier Benasque Valley, in the end of the last ice age 18,000 years ago, reached a length of 36km, now reduced to 662. The latest period of development matches with the Little Ice Age. Since then, a century and a half, has lost 77% of the surface. The Aneto glacier is the largest glacier in the Pyrenees, has a current area of 75 ha and declining mainly due to rising temperatures in recent decades and reduced snowfall precipitation.
