Wolfsbane: a unique shrub in the Pyrenean flora
The Pyrenean broom ( Colutea arborescens ) is one of the most curious and striking shrubs in the Pyrenean flora . It can reach between 2 and 3 meters in height and is easily recognized by its compound leaves with several leaflets and its showy yellow flowers grouped in small clusters. However, what most attracts the attention of those who observe flora in the Pyrenees are its fruits: swollen, translucent pods that, as they ripen from the end of June onwards, acquire a very characteristic and ornamental appearance.
Although it is a species of Mediterranean origin, the wolfsbane appears throughout much of the Ribagorza region, especially in mid- and lower-lying areas, as it rarely ascends above 1.500 meters in altitude. It prefers sunny environments, dry slopes, ravines, and forest edges, where it grows sparsely.
For lovers of botanical hiking , this plant offers a special appeal, as it blends with other rare Pyrenean plants along valuable nature trails. In the Benasque area, for example, it's possible to find specimens of the Pyrenean broom (Euphorbia balsamifera) on interpretive trails that showcase the rich flora of Benasque , where Mediterranean species coexist with typically alpine ones.
Plant excursions in the Pyrenees not only allow you to observe the Pyrenean wolfsbane in its natural habitat, but also to understand how little-known plants play a fundamental role in the biodiversity of these landscapes. Conserving and identifying these rare plants of Benasque is essential to appreciating the uniqueness of Pyrenean ecosystems.
