Graus, the administrative capital of Ribagorza, is a destination that combines history, culture, and gastronomy in a stunning natural setting. The town retains a medieval layout that invites leisurely exploration, allowing visitors to discover its arcaded squares, lively streets, and corners steeped in centuries of history.
Among its illustrious figures are Sancho Ramírez, who conquered the town in 1083; Saint Vincent Ferrer, who preached here in 1415; and Joaquín Costa, a thinker and politician who lived and died in Graus in 1911.
Walks among heritage and tradition
Starting your visit at the Joaquín Costa Monument is the best way to explore the historic center. From there, Salamero and Barranco streets lead to the Linés Gate and Fermín Mur y Mur Street, which opens onto the Plaza Mayor, one of the most beautiful arcaded squares in Aragon, where the Town Hall stands out. Following the Calle Mayor, you reach the Plaza Coreche, and crossing the Barrichós neighborhood via San Vicente Ferrer Street, you arrive at the Plaza Fantón and the Chinchín Gate, the old entrance to the town from Barbastro.
The town is made up of numerous hamlets, such as Panillo, with its Dag Shang Kagyu Buddhist temple ; Fantova, with its medieval defensive complex; and Pano, home to the Romanesque hermitage of San Antón. All of these contribute cultural and scenic nuances that enrich tourism in Graus.
An environment to enjoy all year round
Nature in Graus offers a wide range of activities. The Joaquín Costa reservoir, the nearby mountain ranges, and the Aguinaliú salt flats are perfect for hiking or cycling. Within the town itself and its outlying villages, visitors can combine countryside walks with cultural visits and stops at Graus's restaurants , where they can sample artisanal sausages, longaniza—a star product with its own festival—and traditional dishes.
The patron saint festivities in honor of Santo Cristo and San Vicente Ferrer are celebrated from September 12th to 15th . One of its most unique events is the Mojiganga , a popular spectacle declared of national tourist interest. Throughout the year, Graus hosts fairs with centuries of history and a lively truffle market held on Saturday mornings during the season.
