A stroll through Sopeira: history, nature and tradition in Ribagorza

A stroll through Sopeira is to delve into a unique enclave of Ribagorza, located in the eastern part of Aragon, very close to neighboring Lleida. This small municipality, along with the hamlets of Aulet, Santoréns, and Pallerol, lies on the banks of the Noguera-Ribagorzana river, surrounded by rugged and spectacular landscapes. The Escales gorges and the dam of the same name define the area's character and make it an essential destination for those seeking to combine nature, heritage, and tranquility.

Strolling through its streets is to discover traditional Pyrenean architecture, with stone houses that adapt to the terrain. But among all its buildings, the impressive Monastery of Alaón stands out , a true jewel of Ribagorza Romanesque architecture and declared a National Monument in 1931. Its Visigothic origins are evident in the crypt beneath the altar, while its three-aisled basilica floor plan, the apses, and the checkerboard frieze on the walls reflect Lombard and Jaca influences. It is, without a doubt, the most outstanding monument to see in Sopeira and one of the most remarkable examples of Pyrenean Romanesque architecture.

The natural surroundings complete the experience. A pleasant path leads from the monastery along the river, crossing a bridge to the foot of the dam, while another path skirts the Escales reservoir, offering viewpoints with unique panoramas. For those seeking relaxation after their visit, Sopeira Turismo also offers a small recreation area at the dock, equipped with a multi-sports court and shaded areas ideal for families.

Nor is the gastronomic aspect lacking: in any Sopeira restaurant it is possible to taste traditional dishes of the region, accompanied by high quality local products.

A stroll through Sopeira is, ultimately, a journey between the majesty of Romanesque architecture and the serenity of the Pyrenean nature.
