Viacamp Castle: the tower that watches over the Ribagorza horizon
The most recognizable image of Viacamp is undoubtedly the silhouette of its imposing cylindrical tower against the horizon. Located atop the hill overlooking the town, this fortification has become a symbol of the town and one of the most prominent landmarks among the castles of Ribagorza . Both those who regularly travel the N-230 and first-time visitors are captivated by its austere and robust profile, which conveys the strength and resilience of centuries of history.
Built in the 11th century, the tower of Viacamp Castle was conceived as a strategic watchtower for defense against Muslim incursions. Its location offers unparalleled panoramic views in all directions, allowing for the surveillance of vast stretches of territory and the anticipation of any threat. The choice of this site was no accident: those who erected this structure sought maximum visual control and the greatest possible security.
The tower has four floors, each designed with very clear defensive criteria. The first two are completely windowless, without any openings, and were originally accessed via an elevated entrance, which greatly hindered an assault. On the entrance floor, which was renovated during the restoration work, the medieval latrine is still preserved, a detail that helps us imagine what daily life was like in the fortress.
On the third floor, three narrow loopholes allowed for observation and the firing of arrows or projectiles, minimizing the entry of enemy attacks. The top floor, the most prepared for active defense, was equipped with machicolations and wooden platforms for pouring boiling liquids or hurling objects at attackers. It also featured a niche dedicated to divine protection, a reminder of the importance of faith in times of danger. The holes visible on the exterior of the tower, now useless, were originally openings for scaffolding during its construction.
A visit to the medieval castle of Viacamp is completed by exploring the rest of the grounds, including the Church of San Esteban, located next to the cemetery. In medieval times, it was dedicated to Saint Michael and formed part of the fortification. Currently, the restored building houses the Ribagorza Watchtowers Interpretation Centre, with free admission and explanatory panels that help visitors understand the function of these defensive structures.
The history of Viacamp documents its first mention in 1062. Over the centuries, the castle passed through the hands of the descendants of Arnau Mir de Tost, the Barony of Castro, and, from 1322, the Second County of Ribagorza. It also played a significant role during the Napoleonic Wars and the First Carlist War.
How to get to
Viacamp Castle is located in the town of the same name, which belongs to the municipality of Viacamp i Litera. A parking area next to the Church of Our Lady of l'Obac, with medieval remains dating back to the 13th century, allows you to leave your car just a few minutes from the castle grounds. From there, a signposted path leads in just five minutes to the tower's esplanade, where you can visit the interior and enjoy a viewpoint with an interpretive panel that offers a privileged view of the surrounding area.
