Pano Castle: medieval stronghold overlooking the Fueva Valley

Perched atop a strategic location with breathtaking panoramic views over the Fueva and Cinca valleys, stands Pano Castle , a religious-military complex that played a key role in the Christian campaigns against the Muslim strongholds of Graus, Barbastro, and Monzón. Construction of the castle dates from between 1055 and 1060, carried out by local stonemasons who, following the trends of the time, imitated the style of the Lombard masters, characterized by the use of well-worked ashlar blocks and solid, functional architectural solutions.

Although the history of Pano suggests the site may have had Muslim origins, it is certain that after its conquest it became part of the Christian defensive line. Its elevated location not only allowed control of access to the valley but also maintained visual contact with other nearby fortresses, such as Samitier Castle. This network of fortifications functioned as a warning and defense system against potential incursions.

Of the entire complex, the best-preserved feature is the circular tower located at the southwest corner of the enclosure. Attached to it, a solid wall retains several openings at its base, designed to pour boiling or flammable liquids on attackers. This defensive solution, known as a machicolation or bulwark, was common in medieval fortifications facing prolonged sieges. Three rectangular towers reinforcing the wall still stand.

The fortification also included a church dedicated to Saint Engracia. The remains of this church, with a single nave and a semicircular apse facing east, can still be seen next to the tower. Its function was not solely religious: in times of conflict, these spaces also served as a storehouse or refuge for the population. In the upper part, next to the north tower, the cistern that guaranteed the water supply in case of siege still exists, excavated and protected to prevent contamination.

The medieval castle of Pano is today a perfect destination for those seeking to combine cultural and nature tourism. The interpretive panels installed within the castle grounds offer detailed information about its history, architecture, and the role it played within the Ribagorza castle network.

How to get to

Pano Castle is located in the village of the same name, within the municipality of Graus. From Graus, take the northern exit and, after just over a kilometer, a well-signposted turnoff towards the Fueva Valley. After passing the junction leading to the Buddhist monastery of Panillo, at the highest point of the road, you can see the village of Pano. From there, a well-maintained track leads to the vicinity of the castle.

Although it's possible to drive very close, the best option is to park near the Collada hermitage and walk the kilometer to the fortification. The path, surrounded by nature and offering spectacular views, adds an extra attraction to the visit for those looking for things to see in Pano and wanting to enjoy a place where history blends seamlessly with the landscape.
