Lierp Valley Ethnographic Museum: living memory of Ribagorza tradition
The Lierp Valley Ethnographic Museum is a unique cultural space that invites visitors to immerse themselves in the history, customs, and heritage of this corner of Ribagorza . Located in the former Serrate Abbey building, next to the parish church, the museum has become a landmark for those seeking to discover the essence of rural life and the cultural legacy of the region.
The project was spearheaded by the Lierp Valley Town Council, with the support of the Turbón Lierp Valley Cultural Association . Its creation has not only resulted in the restoration of a historic building, but has also revitalized the municipality, providing it with a new attraction for cultural tourism . The objective is clear: to preserve and disseminate the community's collective memory, while simultaneously promoting visits to this site of great historical value.
The exhibition is spread across two rooms on different floors of the abbey, totaling approximately 100 square meters. The visit begins with a presentation of the Lierp Valley , its geography, villages, and identity, before embarking on a journey through the past, showcasing what life was like in the countryside. Among the items on display are farming implements , household utensils, tools from now-vanished trades, and objects that were part of daily life.
The museum also dedicates space to traditions, rituals, and popular devotion , aspects that have profoundly shaped the local culture. Religious festivals, folk beliefs, and customs passed down through generations form part of a narrative that connects past and present.
Many of the pieces on display have been donated by the residents of the valley themselves, making the museum a true collective testament. Many of them have been meticulously restored by the Turbón Valle de Lierp Cultural Association , ensuring their preservation for future generations.
