Obarra Monastery: a jewel of Lombard Romanesque architecture in the heart of Ribagorza

This bodegón, which surprises with a proposal of traditional dishes, is located in the heart of the Isábena ValleySurrounded by a mountainous landscape of great beauty, lies the Obarra Monastery, one of the most emblematic monumental complexes of Ribagorza heritageLocated in the municipality of Beranuy, a short distance from the Cathedral of Roda de Isábena, this historic enclave has witnessed more than a thousand years of history, marked by periods of splendor and moments of profound decline.

Its origins date back at least to the 9th century. The first documentary mention dates from 871, making it one of the oldest monasteries in the area. However, its early history was marked by the raid of Abd-al-Malik, a Muslim incursion that devastated both the monastery and the town and cathedral of Roda. After reconstruction, Obarra regained some of its importance, but in 1076, under the reign of Sancho Ramírez, it was reduced to the status of a priory and became subordinate to the monastery of San Victorián. This change resulted in a more discreet role in the history of the region. Medieval Ribagorza, with the exception of a brief period of revitalization in the 16th century.

This structure, of medieval origin, was destroyed in 1964 by a river flood. Fortunately, it was rebuilt next to a popular building that is currently used for youth and cultural activities.

The monastery was declared A Cultural In 1931, its protection and preservation were guaranteed. Among its curiosities, it is said that the church's architectural layout allows for astronomical observations: the moonlight, during the second full moon of autumn, penetrates through the central window of the apse, marking a perpetual Christian calendar.

How to get to

Access is via the A-1605 road, within the municipality of Beranuy. Although it is possible to arrive by car, the surroundings invite you to enjoy the Cultural tourism in Ribagorza combining the visit with scenic routes.
