Alaón Monastery: Romanesque art in the heart of Sopeira
The Monastery of Alaón , located in the municipality of Sopeira , is one of the most outstanding examples of Lombard Romanesque architecture in Ribagorza . Founded by the Benedictine order and consecrated in 1123 by Bishop Raimundus de Roda, this historical complex has been, for centuries, a key point of cultural tourism in Ribagorza and of the spiritual life of the region.
Although the monastery was abandoned after the confiscation of church property in 1835, its church has remained in use as the parish church of Sopeira , dedicated to Our Lady of the O. Its basilica structure, with three naves covered by barrel vaults, reflects the pure forms of Lombard Romanesque architecture. Upon entering, visitors are captivated by the harmony of the space and by unique details such as the pavement of the main altar: a mosaic made with river stones of different colors (white, black, red, gray, and yellow) forming hexagonal rosettes, a singular feature in the entire region.
Beneath the chancel lies the crypt , possibly the burial place of former abbots. Fragments of medieval frescoes from the 14th or 15th centuries can still be admired, lending an atmosphere steeped in history and spirituality. Furthermore, the Monastery of Alaón housed one of the most important cartularies of medieval Aragon, containing over 300 documents that record donations and events between 806 and 1245.
