Hermitage of San Vicente de Finestras: Romanesque architecture and unique landscape in Ribagorza
The hermitage of San Vicente de Finestras is located in the municipality of Viacamp, in an area of great scenic and historical interest. It is a Romanesque building that, according to studies, was erected between the 11th and 12th centuries, and still retains much of its original structure. In addition to the hermitage, visitors can explore the remains of Finestras Castle nearby , a medieval fortification that, together with the church, formed part of a strategic defensive and religious complex in the area.
The building was constructed with small, well-squared ashlars , taking advantage of the site's rocky walls not only as a base but also as part of the north wall , thus reinforcing its integration into the landscape. Rectangular in plan and narrow in size, the hermitage consists of a single nave divided into three sections, with blind arches on the Epistle side wall.
Its semicircular apse , characteristic of Romanesque architecture, was preceded by a semicircular arch. In the center of the apse, a small window with a full arch opens, above whose lintel a delicate rosette was carved. At the springing of the semi-dome vault, a frieze decorated with zigzag motifs and leaves is preserved —simple ornamental elements, yet laden with medieval symbolism.
The corbels that supported the transverse arches of the nave show remnants of a checkerboard pattern , now badly worn by time. The original roof was a barrel vault reinforced by transverse arches, of which only the section closest to the apse remains standing. The portal, now lost, was located on the west wall, facing those ascending from the town center.
