Hermitage of the Virgin of Llano de Laguarres: Romanesque heritage in the Isábena valley
The Hermitage of Our Lady of Llano de Laguarres is located in the village of Laguarres, which belongs to the municipality of Capella, in the heart of the Isábena Valley , an area of great natural and cultural value within the Ribagorza region . This lovingly restored and preserved church is a prime example of rural religious architecture that has endured through the centuries, serving as a landmark for both local residents and visitors interested in cultural tourism in Ribagorza.
Its original construction dates back to the 13th century , although its architectural style clearly shows influences from the late Romanesque period of the 12th century. It is a single-nave church with a rectangular floor plan , culminating in a semicircular apse facing east, as dictated by Christian tradition. Two small side chapels were added in the 16th century to either side of the chancel, enriching the structure and expanding the worship space.
Architectural evolution
The building has undergone several modifications over time, reflecting the living history of the Virgin of Llano de Laguarres . In the 16th century, in addition to the chapels, the entrance door was added to the western wall , and possibly the pointed vault covering the nave. Later, in the 18th century, the distinctive bell gable was added , an element that gives the complex a recognizable profile in the landscape.
Inside, the walls have exposed stone, although the ashlar joints were made with cement mortar during the restorations of the 1970s, a common practice at the time which, although it does not follow traditional techniques, has allowed the solidity of the structure to be preserved.
