Cornudella Dolmens: Jewels of Megalithism in Ribagorza

The dolmens of Cornudella form one of the most outstanding megalithic complexes in the archaeological heritage of Ribagorza . Located in a natural setting of great beauty, within a lush oak forest—considered one of the most impressive in Aragon—they offer unique testimony to the funerary practices and rituals of the prehistoric communities that inhabited the area.

The first of these, known as Cornudella I or Cabaneta del Fornó , is a simple rectangular dolmen, delimited by stones that form a semicircular tumulus of artificial origin. These types of structures were used as collective burial sites, and their construction required a significant community effort.

The second, Cornudella II or Cabaneta del Trancat de Dalt , features a rectangular chamber and demonstrates an ingenious use of the surrounding environment: some natural boulders were used as supports for the slabs, and the tumulus was completed with stones and earth. The prior preparation of the terrain and the presence of a lower slab at the entrance reveal a careful design, possibly with symbolism associated with the passage between the world of the living and the world of the dead.

Just a few meters from these two monuments stands an upright stone that some researchers consider a menhir , although it is possible that it was part of another, now vanished, dolmen. This feature adds even more interest to the megalithic site of Cornudella , making it a landmark for archaeological tourism in Ribagorza.

To get there, take the N-230 from Puente de Montañana towards Pont de Suert. After Arén, a left turn leads to Sobrecastell; continue to Hostalet, where you need to request permission to visit (telephone 974 347155), as the dolmens are located on private land.
