Chiriveta Castle: a solitary sentinel amidst nature and history
Perched atop a rocky promontory and surrounded by a stunning natural environment, stands Chiriveta Castle , one of the most unique examples of a medieval castle in Ribagorza . Located near the abandoned village of Chiriveta, within the municipality of Viacamp y Litera, this ancient 11th-century Romanesque fortification still retains much of its defensive structure, especially a circular tower that dominates the landscape with a majestic presence.
The most recognizable element of the complex is its watchtower , approximately 3,5 meters in diameter and 15 meters high. Although time has deteriorated much of the original infrastructure, remnants of the walled enclosure and an old moat that reinforced the site's defenses are still visible. Architectural analysis reveals that this tower had at least four floors: the second level, although currently lacking visible openings, may have had defensive loopholes, while the third had five semicircular arched openings with vaulted ceilings, designed to house wooden scaffolding, a common feature in constructions of the period.
According to some historical sources, the castle could be the same as the old Montgay Castle , mentioned in 12th-century documents as a donation made in 1143 by Ramon Berenguer IV to the Knights Templar. However, this identification remains a subject of debate among historians, and there is no academic consensus on the matter.

How to reach?
The Chiriveta tower is located on the outskirts of the abandoned village of Chiriveta. From the N-230 road, which connects Benabarre with Montañana, take a signposted turnoff towards the hamlet. Once in the village, continue along a forest track southwest towards El Mas. From this point, a well-marked path leads visitors to the Virgen del Congost (Virgin of Congost ), a walk of about 40 minutes, and 15 minutes later, to the base of the tower.
Although it's possible to drive to the vicinity, it's recommended to leave your car in Chiriveta and complete the final stretch on foot. The trail offers spectacular views , absolute silence, and total immersion in the Ribagorza landscape, making this route a unique experience for lovers of Chiriveta's history and nature.
