Interpretation Centre of the Witches of Laspaúles: memory of a dark historical episode

The Witches' Interpretation Centre in Laspaúles is a unique space that invites visitors to delve into one of the darkest chapters in the history of Laspaúles and Ribagorza mythology . Far from being a mere recreational attraction, this centre offers a profound reflection on the intolerance, fear, and persecution suffered by many women in the 16th century under accusations of witchcraft.

Its galleries display instruments of torture , faithful replicas of originals used in different parts of the world and during the same period, whose purpose was to break wills and obtain confessions from those accused of being "witches" or "heretics." These pieces starkly illustrate the depths of human cruelty that could be attained when one believed oneself to be in possession of absolute truth.

The story of the center is directly linked to a documented event that marked the town: between February 19 and April 29, 1593, twenty-eight women —twenty-one from Laspaúles and seven from neighboring villages—were tried and accused of witchcraft. Twenty-two of them were convicted and executed. This episode came to light thanks to manuscripts found in 2001 by Domingo Subías, the town's parish priest, which date from the time of the events.

Every two years, on the first weekend of August, the village relives these events with the performance of Lo Consell de Laspauls , a historical reenactment in which the streets fill with locals in period costumes, transporting visitors back to the 16th century. This celebration, in addition to commemorating the events, has become an act of recovering historical memory and an essential event for those seeking cultural tourism experiences in Ribagorza.

Visiting the Witches' Interpretation Centre in Laspaúles is to delve into a true story, reflect on the intolerance of the past, and understand how superstition and fear shaped the destiny of so many. It's a place that combines historical memory with cultural outreach, ideal for those who wish to discover the region's lesser-known and mythical side.
