Les Quilles game
The game of Les Quilles is one of the most unique and representative traditions of Benasque, a practice that combines sport, skill, and a strong sense of community. Thanks to the efforts of the Benasque Women's Association of Les Quilles , founded over a decade ago, this activity has crossed borders, becoming known not only in various towns in Spain, but also in countries like France and Italy. The association is made up of some 22 women, true ambassadors of this tradition, who meet every weekend to practice and compete, keeping alive a game that is part of the Ribagorza cultural heritage.
The game has very particular characteristics that differentiate it from other traditional bowling variations. Nine pins, turned from wood, are used; they are truncated cones and end in a ball. The central piece, known as the nou , is distinguished by having three lines marked on its surface, giving it a special role in the game's dynamics. Matches pit two teams of three to five players against each other, creating an atmosphere of healthy competition and camaraderie.
The main objective of Les Quilles is to knock down a specific number of pieces, which varies depending on the round. Similarly, the throwing distances also change throughout the game, adding a strategic and adaptive element. The throwing position is clearly defined: the rear foot must remain stationary behind a line marked on the ground, without crossing it at any time.
The game, demanding concentration and precision, unfolds in a festive atmosphere, with the crowd cheering and the players exchanging jokes and advice. Each throw requires technique, measured strength, and excellent coordination, as it's not just about knocking down pins, but about doing so while adhering to the specific rules of each hand.
Victory is achieved when one team completes six hands before its opponent. Beyond the result, the true reward lies in the camaraderie and the preservation of a tradition that has adapted to the times without losing its essence.
Today, the Les Quilles Game is not only an attraction for those seeking to learn about Ribagorza traditions , but also a living experience of Benasque's culture , inviting locals and visitors to discover a legacy that continues to be passed down from generation to generation.
