Ball de Benás: living tradition and culture in the heart of the Pyrenees
Every June 30th , Benasque celebrates its patron saint, San Marcial , in a festival that blends devotion, folklore, and local pride. Among the most emblematic events is the Ball de Benás , also known in the local dialect as Ball dels omes , a traditional dance that, true to its origins, is performed exclusively by men.
The day begins with the procession of the saint, led by the festival stewards , who walk through the streets of Benasque accompanied by residents and visitors. Upon reaching the Town Hall square , one of the most anticipated moments takes place: the dancers, with flowers attached to their heads with scarves and accompanied by the sound of castanets , dance in a style that has remained virtually unchanged for more than two centuries.
The origins of the Ball de Benás date back to 1820 , and its music holds special historical significance, as it inspired the melody of the Riego Hymn , which was later used as the official anthem during the Second Spanish Republic. The dance consists of three distinct parts . In the first, couples from Benasque arrive at the plaza dancing before the saint as a sign of respect and welcome. The second part is the dance to the patron saint , in which the dancers surround the image of Saint Martial with characteristic steps and turns. Finally, the third part, known as the “marradetas ,” symbolizes victory and the festive culmination of the dance.
The tradition doesn't end there. The following day, the Ball de les Dones takes place , in which women join the festivities and dance alongside the men in pairs, sharing the spotlight and thus concluding two days of intense cultural and social activity in the town.
