Hermitage of the Virgin of Piety: history, architecture and tradition in Santaliestra and San Quílez
The Hermitage of Our Lady of Mercy is located in the municipality of Santaliestra and San Quílez , in a privileged setting that combines history, spirituality, and nature. The hermitage stands atop the Tuzal de la Virgen , a hill that forms a natural promontory surrounded by the Ésera River. This location once gave the hermitage a distinctly defensive character and today makes it a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the valley. From here, the views of the municipality, the course of the Ésera River, and the surrounding mountains are unbeatable, offering a perfect setting for cultural and scenic tourism in Ribagorza.
Origin and history
The earliest remains of the church date back to the 11th century , although the current structure shows significant alterations carried out in the 12th or early 13th centuries. Originally, the history of Our Lady of Mercy was linked to a defensive complex, of which only scant traces remain today. In fact, the hermitage was once a military church, serving both religious and military functions at a time when churches played a key role in protecting population centers.
Unique architecture
The medieval hermitage of Our Lady of Mercy has a single nave and a rectangular floor plan , facing east and ending in a semicircular apse. A small window, built of tufa stone, opens in the center of the apse, providing light to the presbytery. The structure is built of rubblework and masonry, a common technique in rural constructions of the period.
One of its most distinctive features is its bell gable attached to the south wall , an unusual location that sets it apart from other Romanesque churches in Ribagorza. The original doorway, a semicircular arch with voussoirs, is now blocked, having been replaced by a restored entrance in the west wall. Around the hermitage, remains of other buildings can still be seen, probably related to its defensive past.
Tradition and pilgrimage
Our Lady of Mercy remains a devotional figure for the residents of Santaliestra and San Quílez. Every August 15th, a pilgrimage is held in her honor, combining Mass with a festive atmosphere. The day includes brass band music and a communal meal featuring longaniza sausage and chireta , traditional dishes of the Alto Aragón region.
Access and environment
The hermitage is accessed on foot via a path improved in recent years, allowing for a pleasant walk surrounded by nature. It can be reached from the A-139 road , taking a turnoff just before the Santaliestra tunnel, along the old road. At the top, next to the hermitage, interpretive panels and picnic tables have been installed, making the site an ideal place to combine cultural and nature tourism.
Although the interior is not open to the public, the Hermitage of the Virgin of Piety offers a unique experience: a thousand-year history, well-preserved Romanesque architecture, living tradition, and a natural setting that invites contemplation.
