Hermitage of Santa Quiteria and San Bonifacio de Montfalcó: Romanesque jewel in a unique setting
The hermitage of Santa Quiteria and San Bonifacio stands in the small village of Montfalcó, part of the municipality of Viacamp, in a spectacular location overlooking the Canelles reservoir and offering breathtaking views of the Mont-rebei gorge . Its origins date back to the 11th century , making it one of the oldest churches in the Ribagorza region and a key site for those wishing to learn about the history of Santa Quiteria and the medieval religious architecture of the area.
It is an irregularly shaped building, adapted to the rock on which it stands. It has a rectangular floor plan with two naves and a double straight apse . The smaller nave consists of a single bay plus the chancel, while the larger nave has three bays. Some archaeological evidence found during the restoration suggests that it may originally have had a semicircular apse , following the most common typology in Romanesque chapels of the period.
The church is covered with a barrel vault , supported by transverse arches resting on a continuous bench attached to the walls. During the restoration work carried out in the early 1990s, later additions, such as the choir loft at the foot of the church, were removed, and remnants of the ancient murals that decorated its interior were discovered. Unfortunately, these paintings were removed for conservation, but their discovery provides valuable evidence of the artistic richness the building must have possessed originally.
The main entrance is located in the north wall, through a semicircular arched doorway formed by narrow voussoirs. This simple yet harmonious detail complements the building's understated character and its integration with the surrounding natural environment.
Beyond its architectural value, the Santa Quiteria hermitage stands out for its privileged location. To reach Montfalcó, take a well-maintained track from Viacamp, a town accessed via the N-230 road after passing Benabarre in the direction of Vielha. Once in Montfalcó, a marked trail leads to the hermitage in just 15 minutes of walking. Although it is possible to drive to the immediate vicinity by 4x4 , it is recommended to complete the final stretch on foot to fully appreciate the scenery.
