Basilica of Our Lady of the Rock: spiritual and monumental symbol of Graus
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rock stands majestically on the slopes of Peña del Morral, overlooking the town of Graus and offering a privileged panoramic view of the valley. Legendary origin and first constructions
The story of the Virgin of La Peña dates back to the time of the reconquest of Graus, when King Sancho Ramírez recovered the town in 1083. According to tradition, at an undetermined date later, mysterious lights illuminated a hollow in the rock. There, an image of the Virgin was found, which from then on was known as "La Peña" (The Rock). To honor her, a first Romanesque chapel was erected in the 13th century, part of whose western wall is still preserved and incorporated into the current church.
Gothic transformation and monumental complex
In the 16th century, the basilica acquired its current appearance, in a late Gothic style with Renaissance elements. But the monumental complex extends beyond the church: it also includes the Chapel of St. John Lateran, located in the atrium, and the cloister, which connects the different spaces.
Access to the complex is through the lower floor of the cloister, where a balcony known as the "preaching platform" of Saint Vincent Ferrer stands out. Tradition holds that from this spot the saint preached during his visit to Graus in 1415, on which occasion he donated to the town the famous crucifix that is venerated today in the Church of San Miguel.

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rock has a rectangular floor plan with three bays covered by star-shaped ribbed vaults. Part of its structure rests directly on the rock, giving it a unique character. The original vault is preserved in the apse, presided over by a crucifix by the sculptor Modesto Gené.
To the left of the altar is the sarcophagus of Esteban de Esmir, Bishop of Huesca, born in Graus, a great benefactor of the temple and promoter of the construction of altarpieces and the College of the Society of Jesus in 1651. The current image of the Virgin of the Rock is a copy from 1940, made by Felipe Coscolla from an earlier carving which, in turn, replaced the original stone image found in the rock.
The eastern wall features a Gothic rose window that filters soft natural light, creating an atmosphere of contemplation. Opposite the entrance stands the small Chapel of St. John Lateran, enclosed by pillars and a pediment, completing the harmony of the ensemble.
